Generic Name : Acarbose

Trade Name(s) : glucobose, recarb, gubose, abacus-50, asucrose

Why it is prescribed: It is a tetrasaccharide from fungus.It inhibits intestinal alpha glucosidases thereby lowering the hyperglycemic levels.It delays carbohydrate digestion and prolongs digestion time.

When it is to be taken: 50 milligrams initially and gradually raised to 50 milligrms thrice daily.Maximum 200 milligrams thrice daily.

How it should be taken: It comes in the form of 50 and 25 milligrams tablet.

Special Instruction : patients suffering from colitis,partial intestinal obstruction,abdomonalm surgery and renal impairement should use the drug only with doctors consultation

Side Effects : Flatulence, soft stools,diarrhoea,pain and adverse skin reactions are the side effects of this drug.

Other Precautions : Contrindicated in old age,pregnancy, breast feeding

Storage Conditions : Store at room temperature in a tight container.
